dmote – PS

1. Tell us who you are, what crews you rep / what crews stand for etc?

Dmote/Shank – i write PS (Prime Suspects) its really an anti crew, its just my freinds from my local bar in Australia, its a crew i started in 87 which had long been gone, we resurected it for a bit of fun…its not meant to be taken seriously, crews stand for different things for different people, my freinds at TATS are a real family, one that spends everyday together, works, bbq’s, private lives, dramas etc are all included, from my experience thats what a real crew is to me…

2. how did you get your tag / what did you used to write at the start etc?

i wrote a bunch of bullshit names in the begining (Size) being one of the better ones, in 87 the dude i looked up to in Sydney was Stylez, he had two alias’s Moske and Dmise, I liked the way they looked so i merged them to make something similar…

3. how long are you writing and how did you start?

i started same as the rest of the world after graff travelled from new york, books, movies etc…started in 85

4. Early influences?

locally in sydney… Stylez, Joker Blaze and long time partner Prins, worldwide…Dero, Wane, Bio, Seen, Mack, Shame, Sak, Tkid etc…

4a. Growing up in Sydney, Australia – what was the scene like? can you tell us about it and your experience in other Australian cities – Melbourne etc.

Sydney was a more aggressive, violent, criminal based scene from the jump, a lot of dudes just tagged while out doing dirt, (Air max, and Lacoste polos was the uniform) that hindered real artistic progress from the early days on, melbourne was way more relaxed lifestyle, (desert boots and flanels) art was the focus, by 89/90 melbourne had at least 7/8 world standard writers…

5. Your style has changed alot from the early 2000s – youve changed from a more blocky, straight barred style into a more funky / flowy style with some classic New York stylings – why did this come about and how?

ha ha i thought it hadnt changed much at all, if your talking about the Shank pieces, i try to let go and just do whatever comes to mind, experiment and be prepared to make mistakes, the Dmote name has always been hard for me, so the Shanks have allowed me to try new things and reinvent my game a little, they are still far from were i want them to be but im thinking about it more than i ever did…
